SOC 2 Questions on Your Next Deal: A Small-Team Survival Guide
Updated October 2026 · 6 min read
A buyer just asked for "your SOC 2 report" and you don't have one. Here is what is actually happening and how teams under 20 people handle it without a $10–30k platform engagement.
What the buyer is really checking
Most security questionnaires ask about SOC 2 as a proxy for one question: can we trust you with our data? The specific asks are usually:
- Do you have a SOC 2 Type I or Type II report, and can you share it under NDA?
- Which Trust Services Criteria does it cover (Security, Availability, Confidentiality...)?
- What is the audit period and were there exceptions?
- If not certified: what controls do you have in place today?
If you don't have SOC 2 yet
The honest, deal-preserving answer has three parts:
- Current state: describe real controls you operate: encryption at rest and in transit, SSO+MFA, least-privilege access, logging, backups, vendor review.
- Roadmap: state plainly whether SOC 2 is planned and roughly when. Buyers accept "Q3" more readily than you'd expect.
- Compensating evidence: offer a pen test summary, architecture doc, DPA, and a completed CAIQ or their own questionnaire as alternatives.
What kills deals is not the absence of a report. It's a fabricated "yes" that due diligence exposes, or vague hand-waving that reads as evasion.
The questionnaire around the certificate
Even buyers who accept "not yet" still send the full 150-question questionnaire. That's the part that eats your week, and the part that drafting tools solve. Rampwire was built for exactly this tier: it drafts answers from your own policies (including your "not yet certified, here's our roadmap and controls" positions), cites sources, and flags the rows a human must decide.
Cost reality check
| Layer | Typical cost | What it solves |
|---|---|---|
| Compliance platform (Vanta, Drata) | ~$10–30k/yr | Ongoing control monitoring + auditor marketplace |
| Auditor (Type I → Type II) | $7k–50k | The actual report |
| Questionnaire answering (Rampwire) | $29–149/mo | Every buyer's security review, self-serve |
Many small teams sequence it: answer the questionnaires well now, close the deals, fund the audit with revenue.
Can we answer "no" to having SOC 2 and still win enterprise deals?
Often yes, if the rest of your answers demonstrate real, specific controls and you offer compensating evidence under NDA. Deals stall when answers are vague or contradictory, not merely because a report is missing.
Is Rampwire a SOC 2 platform?
No. Rampwire does not monitor your controls or produce audit reports. It answers the questionnaires, drafting grounded responses from your documentation at self-serve pricing.
Tired of answering these by hand?
Rampwire drafts grounded answers from your own policies, with citations and confidence flags.
